Wednesday February 28, 2024 - 9am - TBD at the United Church in Los Alamos
A one day workshop learning Nicole’s technique for making fabric collages and trees. The cost of the workshop is $50 for members and $60 for non-members. I have pictures of her tree artwork. Unfortunately, the files are too large for me to attach. If you would like to receive the pics - send me an email at edeskutyb at gmail.com and I will send to you. Thanks! Brenda edeskutyb@gmail.com Supplies: This is a very flexible technique. You can create a whole forest or a single tree, up to you. Think of a simple landscape or tree that you’ve admired, and bring fabrics accordingly. I will have a bin of scraps you can use or you can bring your own. If you’ve never done something like this before I suggest you think of creating a small piece. Also, don’t be intimidated by the long list. I will be listing lots of options, but don’t feel you have to have everything. This class is fun and creative. You can choose realistic or completely crazy. Required: A background fabric-a fat quarter is great. Think sky colors, but don’t limit yourself to that. Fabric for your trees. I like a darker (in value) fabric than your background. Have two to three options. Fabric for your leaves. This can be bright spring colors, fall, snowy colors, up to you. More choices is better but you won’t need a ton! Fabric for some hills or ground. A piece of craft felt as big as your background fabric. Warm and Natural Batting works too. Rotary cutter (it will truly make your life easier if you have a new blade) and self healing mat. You will need a ruler to trim and square your final piece. Superior brand mono poly invisible thread in clear. Neutral colored cotton thread for the bobbin. Acid free glue such as Roxanne’s Baste it or Aleene’s fabric glue Sewing machine with free motion capabilities Sewing machine needles: 70/10 or 80/12 sharps Free motion/darning/embroidery foot for your sewing machine 1 yard of Heat Away interfacing, or any heat soluble interfacing. I will have some for sale if you wish to purchase it from me. An iron and ironing surface Straight pins Fabric scissors Optional: Some paper or old catalog to do glueing on. One additional piece of batting the size of your piece and the fabric of your choice for backing to start quilting your piece. Small piece of Tulle- color depends on your piece. I would recommend black or I’ve even used a grey. You want it to disappear. Small pieces of fabric for a house, or whatever you want to add to your landscape. Hand embroidery floss. I’ve used black for additional branches or multicolored for additional texture to applique down houses. **********************************************

(It will be my “transportation fee” to take a peek at everyone’s stars as I move boxes between houses.) We’ll be having another exchange on February 23rd. I hope everyone is enjoying the challenge of working with other member’s choices of fabric and guidelines. This is an open exchange, so if anyone else would like to join, please contact me. (melodie.gustavsen@gmail.com) Piecemaker's is having a block exchange this year. The Star Gazer's Exchange is starting this week (January) with 12 members who will be making a star block each month. Until we can meet in person, I'll be moving the boxes between houses. If you'd like more information or to join, please email me. Melodie.gustavsen@gmail.com Thanks! Trapunto is an Italian word meaning stuffed. Traditionally, this was accomplished by stuffing extra batting material into a piece after it was quilted. This workshop will explore machine trapunto techniques to add a dimensional element to traditional quilts, wall-hangings or art quilts. With innovations such as wash-out thread machine trapunto is easy and creates dramatic effects.
Saturday September 16th, 2017 Time TBD Location - White Rock Presbyterian Church
Pick a pre-printed panel and have fun with threadpainting and embellishing. We will threadpaint parts of the panel to provide emphasis, definition and depth. We will not cover the entire panel with thread. This technique adds a richness and uniqueness to a printed piece of fabric. No threadpainting or free-motion quilting experience necessary. This technique works really well on panels with birds, flowers, animals, fairies, fruit, and cartoon dinosaurs. OK, basically any panel will be more vibrant, rich and interesting when you are done. Follow up the treadpainting with the Trapunto Workshop and add more dimension to your panel. Participants do not have to take both workshops, they can be independently.
